How Berliners live

GLS cooperates with many Berlin households who accommodate students learning German at the GLS German language school in Berlin.

We asked some of them to photograph their homes, to give you an idea of how people live in Berlin. GLS arranges two kinds of accommodation in Berlin households (more about that at the end of this blog):

Berlin Charlottenburg is a fancy district in the old west, sophisticated but very relaxed - map showing the distance to GLS (=A)

Berlin Schöneberg is middle young, trendy and gay friendly - map showing the distance to GLS (=A)

Berlin Neukölln has many immigrants and used to be a poor district, but it is gentrifying rapidly - map showing the distance to GLS (=A). Neukölln is right next to Kreuzberg (foto below).

Kreuzberg is famous for its alternative subcultures - map showing the distance to GLS (=A).

Friedrichshain is right next to Kreuzberg - on the other side of River Spree and where the wall was: map showing the distance to GLS (=A)

Berlin Grunewald is one of the richest districts, with lots of villas and parks - map showing the distance to GLS (=A)

GLS arranges two types of accommodation in Berlin households, always in a single room (unless requested otherwise):

a) more independent and nearer to the GLS German language school in Berlin : Flat share - i.e. you have a key and you can use the kitchen to cook yourself. The German owner of the appartment offers breakfast or no meals at all (your choice).

b) less independent and further away from school: host family - i.e. you also have a key, but your German host serves both breakfast and dinner. As host families tend to live in suburban regions of Berlin, you may have a longer commute to school.
